16 of May '24

Oliwia Jakubiak and Jagoda Kaminska - students of the Faculty of Architecture at Wrocław University of Technology - created the " Green Fingers" project , as part of the "Studio habitat - complex residential structures" class under the supervision of Dr. Anna Bać and Dr. Lea Kazanecka-Olejnik. Their idea is a response to this year's Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest, which aimed to design theViikki campus in Helsinki.

Green Fingers

The object of this year 's "Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest" was to create sustainable architecture for an integrated urban space on the University of Helsinki Campus, taking into account climatic conditions and the regional, cultural and historical context of Helsinki. The "Green Fingers" concept was positioned on the border of the city's two "green fingers ." The projectaims to design new zero-emission housing on the Viikki campus. The apartments are designed for students, professors and families, with short- and long-term rental options. Five residential buildings with ground-floor services have been designed, taking into account the needs of the campus residents and the surrounding neighborhood, in the spirit of the 15-minute city premise .

project assumptions

Courtyards with different functions, supporting integration, are located between the buildings. Spaces have been created, such as a recreation and entertainment area for young people and students, a place for grilling and eating from a nearby eatery, a skatepark, a playground for children (the neighborhood lacked a kindergarten) and a café with a small pocket park. Nearby is the old museum, redesigned into an ice rink, used as a roller skating rink in the summer. The centerpiece of the premise is a greenhouse with work and relaxation areas, a winter children's playground, space for a café and a greenhouse proper.

ecological solutions

The buildings have a skeletal structure and their facade is made of wood, with stone elements on the first floor. All materials used are locally sourced, which is in line with the idea of sustainable development.

The buildings use a recuperative ventilation system, supported by gravity ventilation. Six heat pumps were installed, supporting the heating of the entire complex. Photovoltaic panels were installed on the roofs. Wooden curtains on the glazed balconies make it possible to regulate the intensity of sunlight in summer, preventing overheating, and in winter they create a heat buffer.

"Green Fingers" combines modern technologies with ecological solutions, creating a friendly living space for different social groups. Thanks to the use of advanced ventilation, recuperation and heat pump systems, the complex provides comfortable living conditions while minimizing energy consumption. Thoughtfully designed common spaces, such as courtyards, playgrounds, a skatepark and a greenhouse, foster the integration of residents and create a sense of community. The project not only responds to the needs of the residents, but also promotes sustainability, using local materials and innovative solutions that harmonize with Finland's harsh climatic conditions.
